Carver History
Carver High School (CHS) was established in 1951. Its first senior class of eight students graduated in May 1953. From January 1953 thru May 1970, Carver High School was the primary preparatory facility for African Americans in Harris County, Georgia. The final class of high school seniors graduated in May 1970.
In 1971, the Harris County Board of Education transformed the building into the the Harris County Middle School. It was used as the middle school until 1994 when, thru Georgia Board of Education initiatives, a new Harris County High School was opened.
In 1995, the Carver Alumni Association (CAA) was formed with the express intent of preserving the CHS building. Local chapters of the CAA were subsequently formed in Hamilton, Columbus and Atlanta soon thereafter. In 2005, the building became an alternative school. It serves in that capacity at the present time.
